Very little is currently known about Emanuel. No search of the
registers has been carried out for him, so there are no copies of any birth,
marriage or death certificates to show. He does appear in the 1851
and 1861 census records, and in the latter he had already started his sea-faring
career aged 12. No entries have been found for the next three
censuses, this may be because he was away at sea. Extracts from the
Fishing Boat Agreement Registers held at the Suffolk County Record Office at
Lowestoft show that he served as skipper on several boats as shown below.
| 1884 | Lakloo |
| 1885 | Velocity |
| 1886 -1894 | Excelsior |
| 1894 - 1907 | Bonnie Lass |
| 1908 - 1912 | Bonnie Lass |
From 1912 there is a blank, nothing further appears until the date of his death, which was the 9th November 1915. There can be only speculation as to the cause of death until such time as the death certificate is obtained, but it must have been an incredibly bad time for the family, especially as Emanuel's son Stephen, and his son, another Emanuel, died earlier in January of the same year. Their boat, the steam trawler Labrador, was lost at sea, either by mine or enemy U-boat action.
